Orso took a nice vacation from everything for a couple of weeks. He lounged on the sofa, he lounged on his day bed, he lounged just about anywhere where he fit. Last Thursday night, we went back to group conformation classes to get Orso back into his conformation state of mind for the upcoming Perry shows. Since then, we’ve been working on his trot and his stack. He’s also back in the water and loving it. Today we spent about 30 minutes playing fetch in the lake and then moved things into the patio to play in the pool. We always like to get him in the pool after swimming in the lake for a few reasons, but primarily so that he never forgets how to get OUT of the pool if he ever falls in. A Cane Corso is pretty clumsy in its teenage stage and Orso is no different! Thanks, Tia Yvette, for the cool underwater video camera! Below is a 2 minute video clip of Orso playing with me in the pool. Enjoy!

We’ve rented a minivan just like the one we rented for the Lakeland shows, so Orso will be cruising in style to the Peach State! He’ll be just shy of his 10-month birthday, so he will be showing in the 9-12 month puppy class with his handler, Jessie Herzon of Chambray Labradors. We haven’t done any conformation preparation since the last shows in Fort Lauderdale, so we definitely have our work cut out for us. Vacation is over, big poppa!
According to the entries, there are 36 Corsi on Thursday, 46 on Friday and 47 on Saturday, so the turnout for this show is spectacular! The shows will be held all three days at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter, 401 Larry Walker Parkway, Perry, GA. Below are links to information about all three shows: Valdosta Kennel Club, Inc. – Thursday, April 14, 2011 Valdosta Kennel Club, Inc. – Friday, April 15, 2011 Atlanta Kennel Club, Inc. – Saturday, April 16, 2011 Just got this wonderful photo below via email from Booth Photography of Orso on March 12th, 2011 in West Palm Beach where he took First Prize, Winners, Best of Winners, Best of Breed, Best of Breed Puppy and Puppy Working Group 3rd. This was Orso’s first 3-point major over 4 other Corsi, including 3 Specials. Many thanks to Judge Kimberly Meredith-Cavanna and Handler Jessie Herzon! Biggest thanks and tons of love goes to Orso the Cane Corso!

They all have their names that the world know them by and then they have a “special” name or two or even three that only a select few people know. Our dogs have truly earned their nicknames, either by the way they look or their behavior patterns.
Since this is Orso’s blog, we’ll start with him. Orso has a few nicknames – we call him “Baby Boy,” “Baby Bear” and “Big Poppa” a lot – but the one that truly fits him is “Buckethead.” Orso has this big, impressive block head that sometimes looks too big for his body, almost like he’s wearing a bucket over his head. Lately, he’s been growing into his head nicely, so we’re not sure how much longer we will be calling him Buckethead, lol. Luna has earned herself a very special nickname. We call her “Poopoo Mouth” since she has at times engaged in coprophagia. It’s pretty gross but we try to find humor in it since it is part of nature. Dr. Pane, her vet, has nicknamed her “Luna-tic” since, in typical Catahoula Leopard fashion, she can be pretty unruly at times. Mouse has a few nicknames and all for distinct reasons. Mouse has a very special personality. He is high-strung and doesn’t settle down easily, so when he does quiet down, we try to not get him excited for no reason. When he is settled and we are talking about him, we refer to him as “The Rat” so he won’t know we are talking about him and get all worked up. Mouse = rodent = rat, so that one is pretty self-explanatory. We have also dubbed him “Chinky” or “Chinky Chink” because when he gets really happy he squints his eyes and they turn into little slits. It might be a little racially insensitive, but it fits him way too well to stop calling him that. Nichelle, his dogsitter extraordinaire, has nicknamed him “The Golden Child” because when he was younger, not only did he eat a leash whole that cost us countless thousands of dollars to remove, but he would constantly run into stuff, get injured or cut, and require stitches. I swear that Mouse’s vet bills put Dr. Pane’s kids through college! Orso’s first 2 points – Best of Winners – Lakeland, FL – February 21, 2011 – Judge Robert J. Caswell First Prize, Winners, Best of Winners, Best of Breed Puppy, Puppy Group 3rd – Fort Lauderdale, FL – March 19, 2011 – Judge Catherine Bell First Prize, Winners and Best of Winners – Fort Lauderdale, FL – March 20, 2011 – Judge Lee Canalizo
As mentioned in our previous post, we came home from the show and spent the rest of the afternoon playing in the lake and the pool. Orso loves to swim and we are trying to teach him how to jump off the dock. He does it once in a blue moon, but is smart enough to know he can fetch through the shore instead, LOL! Below are a few short video clips from the lake and the pool, enjoy! BTW, sorry for my squeaky voice; I’m just trying to be a good puppy cheerleader! Orso had a successful and action-packed Sunday! We started the day at the show, where he took First Prize in the 9 to 12 month puppy class, Winners in the Winners Class and Best of Winners in the Best of Breed Class. We hung out a little while after the show and headed back home for a well-deserved lake & pool day.

Orso had another great show day today! It was Orso’s first time showing in the 9 to 12 month puppy class, so he was finally not alone in his first class of the day! He did very well and took First Prize in his age class, Winners in the Winners Class, Best of Winners AND Best of Breed Puppy in the Best of Breed Class. Later in the day, Orso took 3rd in the Puppy Working Group Class. Way to go, Orso & Jessie!

In honor of Orso’s first Best of Breed 3-point major win last weekend in West Palm Beach, Grandpa Frank & Grandma Eva went on a very generous shopping spree for all 3 dogs! They got all kinds of great new stuff, including healthy snacks, tug and water fetching toys, knuckles, a Nylabone (we loooooove those) and lots of training treats. Thanks, Grandpa Frank & Grandma Eva, we love you! Mouse assuming the “I have a new toy and I’m not sharing!” position:
Today is Orso’s 9 month birthday! Happy “birthday”, baby bear! Below are a few of the photos that Lee Aguilar took of Orso with me at this past Saturday’s West Palm Beach dog show. Thanks, Lee!
With all the poverty and hunger on this planet, it amazes me to know that there are people who would spend $1.6M on a puppy or $100k on semen. Downright criminal. On a lighter note, this expensive furball looks like a hairy orange Orso! For a direct link to this article, click here or go to http://www.bornrich.com/entry/worlds-most-expensive-dog-sells-for-almost-1-million/. WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE DOG SELLS FOR ABOUT $1.6 MILLION Tibetan Mastiffs are known to be the world’s most expensive dogs, and now, a Red Tibetan Mastiff puppy has grabbed the title of the world’s most expensive dog after being sold for about £1 million ($1.6 million). The Tibetan Mastiff, also known as Do-khyi, is an ancient breed and type of domestic dog originating with nomadic cultures of Central Asia. According to the puppy’s breeder Lu Liang, Big Splash (or “Hong Dong” in Chinese) is 11 months old, stands nearly 3 ft. high and weighs over 180lbs. The Mastiff was given a diet of chicken and beef, done with exotic Chinese delicacies like sea cucumber and abalone. Lu runs the Tibetan Mastiff Garden in Laoshan, near the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao. He said…
“He is a perfect specimen. He has excellent genes and will be a good breeding dog. When I started in this business, ten years ago, I never thought we would see such a price.” Although, the sale details haven’t been revealed, Mr. Lu has said that the buyer, a multi-millionaire coal baron from the north of China, paid 10 million Yuan (£945,000) for the Red Tibetan Mastiff puppy. He further said… “I could see he loved the puppy, or I would not have sold him. The buyer told me he thought he was a good investment. As a male dog, he can be hired out to other breeders for as much as 100,000 yuan a shot. He could recoup his money in just a couple of years.” Back in 2009, Chinese millionaire Ms. Wang bought a Tibetan Mastiff named Yangtze River Number Two for $582,000. This lucky dog (world’s second most expensive now) was escorted to his new home by a motorcade of 30 black limousines. |
